A to Z Blogging Challenge: V is for Vampire

We're almost to the end of the alphabet and the A to Z Blogging Challenge.
If you haven't heard of the A to Z Blogging Challenge, check out the A to Z blog. Why not visit a few of the participants or look back over some of our creature-themed posts?

Here at Untethered Realms, we are taking on the Challenge as a group. Each day, we are sharing a fantastical creature that may be from one of our books, a favorite movie, or something we just came up with as entertainment.

For today's post we have...

V is for Vampire

Polar Night's Aleksei by Heather Holden

When we decided on a theme of magical creatures for our group A to Z I knew right away that I wanted to take the letter V. Vampires are my favorite creatures by far, and a vampire named Aleksei Nechayev is the antagonist of my debut novel Polar Night

I admit, I'm not a big fan of the love struck vampires that have become so popular in recent years. I love vampires as monsters and in most cases the more evil they are the better as far as I'm concerned.

Aleksei is definitely evil. If I had to choose a vampire from popular culture that I think Aleksei is most like I would say Angel's soul-less alter ego Angelus from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which is the show that first got me hooked on vampires. Aleksei is arrogant and vicious, and he sees humans as nothing more than toys for him to taunt and tease. He revels in his vampire nature rather than brooding over it. In short, he's not a nice guy at all.

If you like evil vampires, you may like getting to know Aleksei in Polar Night.

Only four more days (and creatures) to go!

  1. I'm a huge fan of vampires being monstrous, too. The romantic kind have become so popular, it's now a breath of fresh air to see them being heartless instead! Needless to say, Aleksei is a breath of fresh air... ;)

    Speaking of Aleksei...heh, I totally never expected to see my art when stopping by this blog today! Thanks for linking to my site... :)

  6. I am sick of snivelling he-boy vampires who have teen angst and make every virginal girl swoon over his unibrow (am I the only one who notices most of these teen boys have one eyebrow??) I love Nosferatu(1922 film) and the books by Ann Rice-now Lestat was quite the character.

  7. I prefer my vampire evil and twisted, though I'll always have a soft spot for Angel.

  8. I love my vampires both ways, LOL! Although, the good vampire stuff gets old fast, and the evil vampire stuff never does.

  9. @Heather, my pleasure! Thanks again for your great pictures.

    @Cherie, I agree, I love Heather's work.

    @Christine, agreed!

    @Mary, thanks!

    @EC, me too. :D

    @Birgit, you made me laugh with that! I hadn't noticed the unibrow LOL.

    @Ellie, oh, I LOVE Angel to death, he's probably the only lovesick vamp I do love. But Angelus was so entertaining I loved his evilness LOL.

    @Liz, that's true. I think it's just that the good stuff is overdone. Like I said above I loved Angel back when I first watched Buffy and still love him now.

  11. The smile makes him look mischievous as well as evil, although still having a bit of a difficult time seeing the evil part. :) But, I'm sure he is.

  12. The best vampires I came across recently was from an old book of George R R Martin (the man can do no wrong!) calle Fevre Dream. Some were evil, some were not, they had an interesting culture, interesting personalities, in short they were more than a stereotype - which is when I find them most interesting.

    I haven't heard of Polar Night, I'll have to check it out, it sounds interesting!

  13. Yeah, I'm not into the Twilight type of vamps, but yours sounds good. I just saw Last Lovers Alive, which in many ways is a sendup of the Twilight Hollywood-ized vamps. It's a very cool movie, about artists and musicians and what it's like to endure creatively for eons.

  14. Oooh...I loved Angel and his bad side! Polar Night is in my toppling (electronically-speaking) TBR pile!

  15. @Patricia, that's just how I feel. :D

    @Silvia, I saw him as more arrogant in the pic, he is really full of himself LOL.

    @EG, thank you!

    @Celine, oh, I'm a HUGE GRRM fan so I need to check that out. Thanks so much!

    @Catherine, I haven't heard of that movie, will have to check it out.

    @River, Angel and Angelus will always have a place in my heart. :D Thanks!

  16. It's funny, but he doesn't look evil. He looks rather sweet. :)
