In the Year 2020

Happy New Year from Untethered Realms!

It's now the year 2020. Sounds very futuristic, doesn't it? As a child, I thought we would all be able to fly to the moon for fun and be friends with hundreds of kinds of aliens all mingling here with us on the planet by this year. Even now as I play with that date in my head, it seems like we should be living in some science-fiction type of world.

I know I'm not the only one who thought that 2020 should be some fantastical year for humans. There were predictions that we'd having flying cars by this point. We do have self-driving ones, though! Some thought we'd have androids with AI too. Sometimes I think my Roomba is smarter than it acts, but we aren't quite at the point where we have robots walking around as part of our every day lives.

There were those who predicted books would be dead. Shame on them! It's not true. While a lot of things have gone digital, humans will always crave stories.

While many of the predictions proved not to be true, there are things that have surprised us all. Good and bad surprises, to be sure, but the fact the human race keeps improvising and creating and pushing forward says great things about us.

What did you use to imagine the year 2020 would bring? What are some of the fun predictions you've heard?

    1. I have an Android too. I have no desire to have it be smarter than me! But the housecleaning part...

  2. Curse you. I now have a very persisten earworm (In the year 2525).
I didn't expect to live to 2020, and am simultaneously amazed and horrified by what I see.

  4. Hi Christine - like the others ... 2020 wasn't even mentioned ... love the track In the Year 2525 that EC mentions. I thought about 2000 when I was at school - totally assuring myself that it'd never come around - but twenty years on and another decade appears. I certainly never thought I'd be writing a blog - good luck with all your stories for 2020 - cheers Hilary

    1. I know lots of folks thought about 2000. Y2K may have overshadowed that! And we're so glad you are writing a blog. :)

  6. I thought we'd be traveling to the moon for vacations. Bouncing around in the atmosphere for a while would be fun. Then staying in an atmosphere-controlled hotel, gazing out the windows at the stars, planets, and other craft flying around. I'd do that! Oh, and special moon food ;)

  7. I thought we would have some moon habitats, have traveled at least once to Mars, and started driving cars with wings. There are small plane and car hybrids, but they are in the pages of Kids National Geographic and not the road/sky regularly.

    1. We're getting closer! Maybe not in our kids' generation but the next one.

  8. Just got finished teaching 1984. Still freakishly on point. Some predictions fall flat, others are quite accurate like Arthur Clarke's prediction of satellite tech years before it was a reality. Let's hope microbiologists get a covid19 vax sooner than predicted!
